Since the disappearance of the Mazda CX-7 in 2012, the CX-9 has been playing the role of both mid and top category SUV in the Mazda lineup and it seems it’s been doing a pretty good job at it.
After adopting the Kodo - Soul of motion aesthetics in 2013, the Mazda CX-9 has remained the same since. As the largest, three-row vehicle of the Japanese line up, the CX-9 reigns as a very versatile and capable vehicle, especially since it’s been filling in for the discontinued CX-7. The 2015 model is also among the last standing in the line up that hasn’t received the Skyactiv treatment. Emphasis is obviously put on cabin space and power to make it one of the most capable 7-seater of the category.
Cabin and cargo volume will easily accommodate the bigger and smaller families. Behind the third row of seats, ideal for kids, volume reaches 487L. With the second and third rows folded down, it increases to six times the original volume to reach 2,851L. And with a cabin of close to 4,000L, the CX-9 offers plenty of room to take everyone, including the grand-parents and the dog on a road trip.
The SUV also offers a wide range of commodities that makes any drive complete. Entertainment-wise, the center console is equipped with a 5,8-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker, Bluetooth infotainment system with steering wheel-mounted controls. Should you opt for the GT trim, your version will also offer a voice activated navigation system, satellite radio, and a 10-speakers Bose audio system. Heated front seating and leather accents complete its clean and sophisticated interior look.
On the safety level, the 2015 Mazda CX-9 offers a nice array of features such as the rear view camera, overturn sensors that deploy the curtain air bag, tire pressure sensors as well as a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert that can come in handy considering the format of the vehicle.
Under the hood, very few changes have been made on the CX-9. It is the only vehicle from the Mazda line up to come with a 3.7L, V6 engine. Despite the mastodon status of the vehicle, it is powered by no less than 273 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty to make the Mazda CX-9 an agile and efficient SUV. You will have the choice between a front-wheel or all-wheel drive layout, but only one transmission is available: a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel economy will vary between 10.0L and 10.6L on the highway, depending on the layout, and between 14.2L and 14.3L in the city.
As a sporty yet flexible vehicle, the Mazda CX-9 ranks among the best options available on the market. One test drive will show you why. Visit us at Performance Mazda to learn more about the 2015 Mazda CX-9.
