The all-new Mazda3 compact car has been completely redesigned for the 2014 model year to offer great styling, powerful and fuel-efficient engines, a refined interior with a new heads-up display, and several safety technologies.
The latter enhance driving pleasure and your sense of security. Changes in the new 2014 Mazda3 have also paved the way for several awards, one of which includes the Best Car under 21K from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.
Now, the 2015 model is here, and offers the same features that made the 2014 edition a hit with consumers and journalists alike.
1. Fresh styling
The so-called smiling grille has been a trademark of Mazda vehicles for quite some time. However, for the third-generation Mazda3, the automaker has restyled its popular compact car so that it provides customers with an even more engaging personality due to the KODO: Soul of Motion design language. With dynamic lines, aggressive-looking headlights and a sharper grille, Mazda’s new “3” image promotes a greater sense of sportiness.
As for features, Bi-Xenon HID headlights with LED signature, LED taillights, an adaptive front lighting and high beam control system, a rear spoiler, and 18-inch alloy wheels are among the available elements that buyers can opt for.
2. More power, more fuel-efficient
A SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine powers the GX and GS models, and produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. With the new engine, direct-injection, and an incredibly high compression ratio of 13.0:1, consumers can expect more power and fuel-efficiency from the 2015 Mazda3.
The new engine will produce more low- to mid-range torque, with 15 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions than the automaker’s previous 2.0-litre. Friction inside the engine has also been reduced by 30 percent, and direct-injection is certainly a benefit as well. Mazda has described the high-pressure 6-hole direct fuel injector as helping to “keep fuel cool to improve combustion efficiency.”
Finally, the high compression ratio of 13.0:1 allows for the capture of more energy from fuel, as well as an increase of 15 percent in fuel efficiency and torque. The 2015 Mazda3 comes with the full suit of SKYACTIV technology, all meant to help increase power without paying for it at the pump.
The standard engine is also mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, and for buyers that prefer the automatic, a 6-speed with manual shift mode and paddle shifters are available, depending on the model. Fuel economy ratings for the GX and GS equipped with the automatic are quite low with a rating of 6.7/4.7 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway). Buyers that opt for the top GT trim, equipped with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine generating 184 hp, and paired with the 6-speed automatic and i-ELOOP (regenerative braking system), can anticipate a rating of 7.1 and 5.0 L/100km.
3. Safety features
Although the automaker’s new compact sedan comes equipped with stability and traction control, and an anti-lock brake system, it’s worth considering Mazda’s other available technologies as well. With the Technology Package on the top GT model, buyers can get the a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, and smart city brake support. Consumers should also note that the Mazda3 has received the TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS, and the top 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
Other elements to appreciate from Mazda’s fresh new 3 sedan include the new electronic interface with intuitive controls, leather-trimmed upholstery and leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle, heated front seats, push start button, moonroof, rearview camera, voice-activated navigation, and an active driving display, all available depending on the trim. Entertainment features also include satellite radio offered with the Technology Package on the GT model, standard steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and an available 9-speaker premium audio system with surround sound.
The 2015 Mazda3 sedan is an enticing alternative to rivals within the segment, especially when considering its fresh new styling, fuel-efficient SKYACTIV technologies, and safety features. The new Mazda3 is available at Performance Mazda with a starting price of $15,995 MSRP.
