Visually, the Mazda MX-5 RF stands out with some subtle changes
We knew Mazda was preparing something important at the New York International Auto Show. What we did not know, however, is that the manufacturer was preparing a new version of its popular MX-5 roadster, the Mazda MX-5 Retractable Fastback or simply MX-5 RF.
Mazda MX-5 RF: the Mazda MX-5 RF with a targa roof
The Mazda MX-5 RF is not just a retractable hardtop version like the previous generation MX-5. In fact, it's more of a targa-type car, with only the portion of the roof above the cabin coming off and storing itself behind the seats so as not to impede on cargo space. This configuration also makes the Mazda MX-5 RF a pretty spectacular car both with the roof on and off.
Under the hood of the the Mazda MX-5 RF is the same four-cylinder SKYACTIV 2.0-liter engine delivering 155 horsepower that powers the MX-5 soft-top. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a six-speed automatic will be optional.
Visually, the Mazda MX-5 RF stands out with some subtle changes to go along with its new roof while the cabin is the same as what we find in the traditional MX-5.
We do not yet know the price of the new Mazda MX-5 RF nor when it will arrive in dealerships, but this information should be available soon.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 is World Car of the Year
Although the Mazda MX-5 RF was the star of New York, the 2016 MX-5 still made headlines when it was named World Car of the Year by a jury composed of several prominent journalists from around the world.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 came ahead of the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC to win the prestigious title. Then a few hours later, the Mazda CX-3 won the title of Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. In short, it was a good day for Mazda!
